We would like to say a huge thank you to all who took part in our fundraising event on Monday 24th September for RNIB; your donations are hugely appreciated.
We would also like to say a big thank you to Lindsay, Jade and her guide dog Silk for taking the time to visit us here at nursery and spend time with the children. The visit involved discussions around the different resources available to support people with visual impairments; the use of a guide dog & gave the children chance to ask questions to further enhance their understanding.
The children were also given the opportunity to experience some of the resources including a sensory sound ball, a colouring book with raised outlines, Braille alphabet cards and goggles that altered their sight.
When using the ball, the person who was receiving the ball had to clap their hands together so the person rolling the ball knew which direction was needed; the children were able to take turns, follow direction & practise their co-ordination skills. The colouring book had raised outlines around the images and Braille underneath the written word. The children used their fine-motor skills to trace around the outline/over the Braille and then used fruit-scented markers to colour in their pictures. When wearing the goggles, the children had to put their trust in their partner to guide them safely around the room.
This visit has led to further questions, discussions and activities from our Bumbles; these have included a blindfolded obstacle course, tracing wikki stix to guide the way & exploring more Braille to guess the letters/words.
