The arrival of a big box in Big Bumbles sparked lots of debate about what we could do with it. After a short and fairly democratic procedure it was decided to build a fire engine. We attempted to colour it red but the pens were “taking ages” so we decided to use paint with big brushes. This did indeed speed the process up. Producing models of this kind supported by an adult helps develop problem solving and forward planning. Collective decision making also saw us adding wheels, ladders, lights and a hose to our design. Designing the steering wheel and dashboard were very popular and we soon had lots of buttons and levers to press. Once in the garden we extinguished many fires and rescued many people from tall buildings.
Through this interest children have learned about people who help us, an occupation critical for everyone and challenged our thinking about superheroes. Not bad for a cardboard box.
